​Student Success
​

Our Students earn a North Smithfield High School Diploma by successfully completing our rigorous academic course sequence, supplemented by electives that allow students to customize their education.  We test students to ensure they have the skills and knowledge needed to become productive members of the global community.  

Required credits include:
  • four academic credits of English
  • four academic credits of mathematics
  • three academic credits of science
  • three academic credits of history
  • seven academic credits of electives

We hold our students to a higher standard.  In order to graduate, students must meet or exceed proficiency requirements on standardized testing, complete a senior project, and pass all their comprehensive course assessments.

At North Smithfield High School, we
collaborate with local universities and
industry professionals to provide our
students with a wholesome, well-rounded, a·ward-winning educational
experience.

Our Rhode Island Department of
Education-approved Career and
Technical Education Pathways are
a manifestation of our steadfast
commitment to student success.
They give students the opportunity
to customize their high school
educational experience and study
fields that capture their personal and
career interests.

Students enrolled in the NSHS CTE
Pathway program gain hands-on
experiences while learning to think
both critically and creatively. These
engaged students grow throughout
the program into confident problem
solvers and self-motivated adults.

Pre-Engineering
At North Smithfield High School, our
student s a re breaking new ground and
solving real-world problems. Using the
latest: techno;logy- as well as math
and phy.sics- students dive deep into
the engineering design process and
compl,ete hands-on proj,ects. Our
rigorous Pre-Engineering Pathway
teach es stude nts to harness t heir
creative and critical thinking abilities to
develop new and exciting innovations
to practical problems. Stude nts wiH
have the opportunity to compete with
pre-engineering students from across
the count ry, collaborate with industry
professiona Is, and show off their work to
prestigious e nginee ring firms.

Business and Finance
Developing new ideas is hard. Bringing
those ideas into fruition is even harder.
In our Business and Finance Pathway, we
train the next generation of entrepreneurs
to transform good ideas into successful
businesses. And while our students learn
the ins and outs of marketing, accounting,
and business management, they will
also take their education outside of the
classroom. They can take advantage
of hands-on learning opportunities to
work alongside local businesses and
see the real-world Implications of their
coursework.

CTE OPPORTUNITIES
  • Develop essential competencies in math, science, design, problem-solving, crttical thinking, self-management, collaboration, and more.
  • Learn to use MakerBot 3D printers:. CNC ShopBot Routers, and VEX robots.
  • Opportunity to join the NSHS/ WSP Engineering Collaborative and compete against other schools to develop projects that utilize topics in statistics, pre-calculus, and the principles of engineering.
  • Opportunity to earn multiple credentials, including the R.I. Financial Scholars Program (EverFi,} ASK certification, and Quickbooks.
  • Opportunity to earn up to six college credits in the Business and Fina nee Pathway.
  • Join a choir or band and gain experience performing in front of massive audiences at national festivals and ensembles.
Music
The Music Pathway at NSHS does more
than teach musicians to play and sing- it
cultivates artists who can forge connections
through sound and performance, and
leave an impression on minds and hearts.
Students participating in this awardwinning
pathway will dig deep into both
performance and music theory, learning
not only how to malce music that sings,
but also learn why and how it connects
with audiences students have the
opportunity to perform locally, nationally
and internationally at venues that range
from local stages to Walt Disney World and
Carnegie Ha'II. Musicians and singers are
also able to participate in out-of-school
workshops spearheaded by renowned
music professionals.

​A pathway for everyone
In addition to our RIDE-approved CTE
Pathways, we also offer 11 alternative
programs that students looking for more
variety in their academic coursework can
choose from.

Advanced Mathematics offers students a
college-leveI math education. With courses
in Honors Algebra 2, Honors Pre-Calculus.,
AP Statistics, and AP calculus (both AB
and BC offered}, students will leave this
program with a strong foundation for
success in post~secondary schooI.

Allied Health Fields introduces students
to non-nurse, non-physician health care
care er opportunities. This in cludes physical
therapists,  dental hygienists, speech-language
pathologists, and more.

Communication, Writing, and Journalism
will introduce students to a variety of
writing styles and important verbal speech
techniques.

​Computer Science and Technology explores
web design, digital graphics, cybersecurity,​robotics, and general computer science
principles.  It provides students with a little
of everything in the computer science
world, preparing students for a wide range
of careers in computer science.

Early Childhood Education is a growing
career field.  Research has shown that the
years prior to a child, entering Kindergarten
are critical to their development. This
pathway collaborates with the pre-school
to teach high school students the latest
about child development and best practices
for educating a child.

Fashion Merchandise and Design
introduces students to the world of clothing
design and production. Students will study
trends and channel their own fashion sense
to produce amazing work.

International Studies Teaches students
about the complex global systems around
them. Coursework includes studying the
history of genocide, European History,
economics, anthropology, and more.
Students will leave this pathway with
a deeper un de rstanding of practical ​​​and ethical issues that arise in global
discussions.

How to enroll
ln-district students
For familes that are new to North Smithfield,
enrollment into the North Smithfield public
school system is simple. Parents should
simply fill out a Student Registration form
on our website nshs.nsps.us, provide proof
of residency in North Smithfield, a copy of
the student's birth certificate, and a copy of
immunization and physicaI forms.

Out-of-district students
Students outside the district interested in
becoming students can also enroll fn North
Smithfield High School if they apply and get
accepted to one of our CTE programs. To
apply, visit our CTE website at nshs.nsps.us/cte.

Accredltation Statement
North Smithfield High School is accredited
by the New England Association of Schools
and Colleges (NEASC), an independent
organization that evaluates over 2,000
schools across New England.  Accreditation by NEASC indicates that we meet or exceed their criteria for educational quality periodically.

Law and Society explores various elements
of law including legislating, interpreting,
and enforcing laws. It also looks at related
areas of study such as psychology, forensic
science, and criminaI rehabilitation efforts
to give students a broad understanding of
this field.

Manufacturing and Materials covers the·
steps taken to transform raw material into a
final product.  This pathway walks students
through the ins and outs of product design,
materiaI specifications, and more.
Public Policy is the study of how the
government responds to problems and
governs society.  Students enrolled in this
program will have the opportunity to learn
about the Constitution, economics, criminal
Justice, sociology, how Congress functions,
and more.

Visual Arts taps into students' inner
creativity and explores the development
process, of various forms of art.  It includes
photography, studio work, and more.
